Verona Outdoor Lantern Wall Lamp

The Verona takes the shape of a traditional coach lantern and strips the fuss out of it: the tapered body and the cap are still there, the scrollwork and the fake candle are not. That leaves a light that suits a period cottage and a new-build porch equally, which is a harder trick than it sounds for exterior lighting.

Two glazing options change the character considerably. Acrylic panels diffuse the light more softly and shrug off knocks, which makes them the sensible choice beside a gate, a garage or a path where a ball might arrive. Glass gives a crisper, more traditional sparkle and a slightly brighter throw, and stays clearer over the years. The frame is finished to resist corrosion in coastal and wet conditions.

Mounted either side of a front door it lights the step and the lock properly; mounted singly it marks a side gate or a garden wall. Fit it at roughly head height or a little above so the light falls on the ground rather than in your face, and wipe the glazing clear of cobwebs and dust a couple of times a year. This is a mains-wired fixture and should be installed and connected by a qualified electrician.
