StormLite IP66 Outdoor Wall Lantern

IP66 rather than the usual IP65, which sounds like a technicality and is not: the second digit steps up from protection against water jets to protection against powerful jets, and it is the rating you want on an exposed wall, a coastal frontage or anywhere weather arrives sideways rather than straight down. On a sheltered porch it is simply reassurance.

The body is moulded ABS in black, which is a deliberate choice over metal in this position. ABS does not corrode, does not need a protective coating that can chip and let water in underneath, and takes knocks from wheelie bins, ladders and bicycles without denting. The 10 W LED is integrated and energy efficient, sized to light a doorway, a passage or a stretch of boundary wall rather than an entire garden.

It suits balconies, back doors, side passages, garden walls and anywhere the weather is hard on fittings. Mount it at a height where the light lands on the ground people walk on, and space repeated fittings evenly along a longer wall. Wipe the diffuser clear a couple of times a year and the output stays even. This is a mains-wired product for installation by a qualified electrician.
