Solar Bamboo Flame Garden Lanterns 2-Pack

Twelve LEDs flickering behind a bamboo screen do a convincing impression of a real flame, and unlike a real flame there is nothing to light, nothing to blow out and nothing that can be knocked over onto dry grass. The lanterns charge through the day from an integrated solar panel and come on by themselves at dusk, running for several hours on a good summer charge, with no wiring and no running cost at all.

Bamboo is what makes them look like objects rather than gadgets: the natural grain warms in the light and the slatted body throws a broken, moving shadow onto whatever is behind it. Supplied as a pair, which is the sensible quantity, they work flanking a path, either side of a door, at the corners of a decking area or standing in a border among planting.

They are built for outdoor use and shrug off rain, but as with all solar lighting the panel needs several hours of direct daylight to give a full evening's run, so a permanently shaded spot will disappoint. Wipe the panel clear of dust and leaves a few times a season, and bring them under cover over a hard winter to extend their life. There is nothing to switch on.
