Bohemian Macrame Wall Hanging

A hand-knotted wall hanging, 70 cm long and 45 cm across, with a geometric body that opens into a deep fringe along the bottom. It is one of the few pieces of wall decor that adds softness rather than another hard frame, which is why a macrame panel does something to a room that a print cannot.

Texture is the point. Against flat plaster or a plain painted wall it breaks up the surface and catches light differently through the day, and the fringe gives a little movement whenever a door opens. It hangs well above a bed, over a sofa, behind a console table, in an alcove, or on a landing wall that has never quite worked with pictures.

The knotting is done by hand, so the spacing and the fall of the fringe vary slightly from piece to piece. It arrives with a hanging cord attached and is light enough for a single small hook or picture nail. Keep it indoors and out of direct sunlight, and freshen it by shaking it out or going over it lightly with a vacuum brush attachment rather than washing it.
