Up & Down LED Outdoor Wall Sconce

Two beams, one fitting. This sconce sends light both up and down the wall, producing the pair of tapering cones that read as deliberate exterior lighting rather than as a security lamp someone screwed on in a hurry. On brick, render or stone the texture picks up the grazing light and the wall itself becomes the feature after dark, which no single downlight achieves.

It is offered as a square or a round body, which is a bigger decision than it looks. The square suits modern render, sharp-edged porches and anything with straight lines to echo; the round softens a cottage wall, a curved arch or a period doorway. Both are waterproof rated for full outdoor exposure, and both come in warm white for a domestic glow or cold white for a crisper, more contemporary look.

Placed either side of a door they light the step without dazzling anyone arriving; run along a garden wall or a driveway at regular spacing they give rhythm rather than floodlighting. Mount at around two metres so the downward cone lands usefully on the ground, and wipe the lenses clear of cobwebs each spring. This is a mains-wired fitting and should be installed by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated.
